Maintenance completed

Our last planned maintenance session at the Discovery Centre mopping up those members who hadn't been able to make earlier sessions or who wanted a refresher already. The weather was looking decidedly dodgy but we always had some shelter under the underpass if needed. Mick kicked off the session checking what people wanted to cover - brakes, gears, wheels - was the general response and so we started with gears and how the rear sprocket is fitted (cassette and freewheel). Then moving on to the chainwheel and cranks and how to tell if a chain is worn. Final piece on the drivetrain was the derailleurs and how to adjust them and lubricate the cables. With the sunshine out, especially compared to last week's rain, the Easy Riders were out in force...31 in total. Setting off together towards Great Notley we split in to two groups at Dagnets Lane and I picked up the lead for the longer ride - 16 riders in total. We headed out towards Willows Green and on to Leez Priory. We also introduced a new approach to ensure no one missed a junction - the rider behind the leader waited for the back marker to go through. A ride out to Marks Hall Farm was the perfect place to model the new BER shirt. Looks great, shame about the model. All members are entitled to one free shirt (long or short sleeve) as part of this year's membership thanks to the grant from Essex County Council - the shirts will promote and advertise the group's activities and so help us reach new people who are looking for a way to get in to cycling.
