Maintenance completed

Our last planned maintenance session at the Discovery Centre mopping up those members who hadn't been able to make earlier sessions or who wanted a refresher already.

The weather was looking decidedly dodgy but we always had some shelter under the underpass if needed. Mick kicked off the session checking what people wanted to cover - brakes, gears, wheels - was the general response and so we started with gears and how the rear sprocket is fitted (cassette and freewheel). Then moving on to the chainwheel and cranks and how to tell if a chain is worn. Final piece on the drivetrain was the derailleurs and how to adjust them and lubricate the cables.

That done we moved on to brakes - again how to lube the cables (not the brake blocks!) and also how to fit and balance the pads against the rim. The weather held off for the first session, although we all retired inside for a coffee to warm up.

Second session was just two and we concentrated on wheel removal and practising changing tubes in case of a puncture. Always important to remember to change in to bottom gear and move that rear derailleur out of the way when taking out and putting back the rear wheel.

Overall feedback has been positive, but guess the real truth will be in how well maintained our members bikes are ;-)
