Six intrepid guys turned up at 9.30 am for a forty miler. After a scattering of snow over night all of us, but hardy Compo, were wrapped up.
Taking care on now wet roads we set off down through Bocking. On passing Peter's house we were greeted by a wave and feeble excuse that he was at a final ukulele rehearsal in the afternoon. Venturing through the lanes and a few hills we cycled through to Toppersfield and Great Yeldham. This part of Essex has quaint but oddly named villages. It was not long before we crossed into Suffolk. Back out of Clare we took a well earned rest at the Golf Club. Over bacon sandwiches we were able to look out on river Stour and put the world to rights!
Once refreshed we were onward to Stoke by Clare and the steep Ashen Hill. On passing through Ridgewell we sailed through a flood before going through Stambourne and on through the lanes to Wethersfield. No quick way back for us but instead through Shalford Green and Panfield.
Good on Patrick for coping with his un-adjusted gears and to Bill and Ron for encouraging him. Thanks to Ivan for his low-down on the golf course and to Paul for his enthusiasm whatever the temperature.
