Our first Saturday start-up sessions at Braintree Leisure Centre in Panfield Lane kicked off to a great start. These free sessions can be anything from: a) not ever having cycled, b) not being able to cycle, c) for those that can cycle but want to enhance their handling skills before progressing to the road d) once beyond the above exercises, to enhance their traffic awareness and how to deal with these circumstances. This session is for one hour between 10.00 and 11.00
Three cycling returners were expertly guided through cycling basics by Mick. One returnee hadn’t been near a bike since childhood, a lapse of fifty years, but after fifteen minutes she was cycling with panache, whilst the other two re-visited their cycling from recent years, assisted by the team of support volunteers. Two of the newbies from the first session even went on to join our Saturday Gentle Ride, between 11.00 and 13.00 interspersed with a relaxing coffee stop at the Discover Centre at Great Notley, joined by a third rider who was also blowing her 'cycling cobwebs' away. Mick led us out for a fun starter ride avoiding any nasty hills and traffic. This proved to be a great confidence boost to another new rider. Everyone returned chuffed with our seven mile round trip. What a great morning. Thanks to Mick, Gifford, Mave, Peter and Bill for all their work and encouragement as the mornings team. Thanks also too, to Richard at Happy Handlebars for arranging these starter events. Having bikes and helmets available to all is making it so much easier for people to try out cycling and have fun. For the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each forthcoming months we will also have Dr Bike sessions at the same venue, between 10.00 and 13.00 for members and the general public to get expert advice and support from Adrian, using the recently bought BER tool kit and Gazebo. However, you will need to be prepared to get you hands dirty.
