Mind the gap....

There were plenty of Easy Riders assembled in Drury Lane for this Wednesday’s bike ride. We welcomed two new riders, Benita and Des, both of whom rode with the middle group.

I was tail rider for the middle group, led by Steve. We pedalled off north through the park, down Blackwater Way and River Mead, followed by a long grind up Broad Road. We need to improve our ability to split into groups of 5, when we are a large group going up a hill. There were about 10 riders at the front, followed by a group of 5 (superb gap left by Ann), and I had a great view of what was going on from the rear. Cars seemed to get past the rear 5 riders easily, but were not able to easily pass the front set.

We took Thistley Green Road (named after the field where Warners grew teasel for the carding mills) and one of Mick’s beloved tracks to come out on Lyons Hall Road. It was a short ride further on to reach Gosfield Shopping Village.

Here I had a chance to have a chat with Des, one of our new riders. It turns out Des used to ride with Branocs, but while he’s recently retired, he’s also recovering from surgery a few months ago, and he’s going to try riding with us. He certainly made our sedate pace look easy! I also discovered he’s a bit of a handyman because he’s working with a rehab organisation, assisting them to renovate/maintain some properties in North London.

On leaving Gosfield, I did not cover myself in glory, as tail rider. I was confused as to exactly who was in our group, so waited several minutes for a couple of riders to join us – who actually were part of the short group. So a couple of us were very late departing, and by the time we caught up with the main body of the group, Steve had gone to look for us, and we had another delay, while he made his way back to us.  Apologies!  All my fault!!

We pedalled through the country lanes back through Panfield, before dispersing to our respective homes.

And some photos from the Hatfield ride, because I forgot to take any this week!
