End of Month Longer Rides 25/09/2024

At the end of the month, Easy Riders have an extended ride of 30-ish and 40-ish miles for the medium and long rides.  This month, one of our ride leaders was unavailable at short notice, and Dave Blaylock stepped up to the mark to lead the Long Ride to Ashfields Carriage Club, with Gavin as his support rider.  Dave’s one of our members with comprehensive knowledge of the area and knew some good lanes to ride.  Thanks Dave.

Bill Baker and I led the Medium Ride south to The Museum of Power.  We had a guest rider with us – Caleb, who is Peter Skirrow’s nephew from Adelaide, Australia.  Caleb (and his girlfriend, Sarah) is at the end of a year’s tour of Europe and will be finishing his campervan trip with a bike tour to Felixstowe, followed by a month in Turkey (or maybe Laos!), prior to going back to Adelaide.  I am very wistful that I did not have either the opportunity or confidence to travel for a year when I was in my 20s, as they have done.  Travel strong, Caleb and Sarah!

Health & safety tip for the day is about making sure your kit is up to date for winter.  Jeff was sporting new wet weather kit (see photo!).  Amanda managed to arrive with only one glove, so it made me feel useful to lend her a spare pair.  Always wear gloves, as they protect your hands if you come off (guess how I know!). Carol ended up with cold hands and was able to borrow full finger gloves.  I discovered that my waterproof jacket has a zip that parts company at the bottom, so I too will be updating my winter kit with a new jacket that stays done up!

The Museum of Power were pleased to see we had risen to the challenge of riding, when the weather forecast was variable.  We were lucky in that it threatened rain, but very little fell on us.  The Museum of Power has recently had a lot of renovations via a Heritage Lottery grant, and the café is considerably improved.  It is a good destination for cyclists.

34 miles, average 9.8mph
